Workers Memorial Day - Wednesday 28 April 2010

Workers' Memorial Day is when workers around the world remember those killed by work and campaign for improved workplace safety. It has been a global day of action since 1996 and now is marked every year in more than 100 countries. Last week, on Thursday 28th January the Department of Work and Pensions announced it is to be recognised by the UK government.

In London Construction Safety Campaign has met with trade unionists from UNITE, UCATT and GMB, and begun planning events in London. They will focus on the Olympic site in Stratford, following the death of Shaun Scurry a week after an incident on 9th December at Westfield's Stratford City site. They will also support the UCATT commemorative event at the statue to the unknown building worker.

Migrant and Refugee Worker Support

London Hazard Centre offers advice and support to refugee and migrant workers

Abuse of worker's employment rights (including health & safety rights) by employers is rife for refugees and migrant workers. They often have rates of pay less than the minimum wage and endure long and illegal working hours. Accidents and injuries have always been high amongst this group of workers as the Morecambe Bay and other tragedies have highlighted. The London Hazards Centre makes this sector of our community a priority for our services.
