Storage

Inside the body, some chemicals are stored in certain tissues, such as fat or bone, and while they remain bound up there, they may do little damage. However, under certain conditions such as rapid weight loss, large amounts of the chemical are released into the blood. How long such chemicals remain in the body varies, but some, like the pesticide DDT, remain for years. One of the reasons why DDT stopped being used in the developed world was because of this persistence in the environment, and even though it has not been used for years in the developed world, most of us have DDT in our bodies.
