Section: 2 Chemicals and Chemistry - Toxicity - Transportation, storage, metabolism and excretion -
Excretion and biological monitoring

Chemicals and their metabolites are excreted from the body, mainly via urine produced by the kidneys. Small amounts are also excreted by the lungs, and in sweat, semen, milk, saliva and bile. The amount of a chemical a worker has been exposed to can sometimes be estimated by measuring how much of the chemical, or certain metabolites, is found in urine. This is known as biological monitoring.
