From: Chemical Hazards Handbook Section: 2 Chemicals and Chemistry - Toxicity - Toxic effects - SkinThe skin is the largest organ of the body, covering about 9 m2, the size of a tennis court. Skin effects are much more obvious than damage to other organs, and in the USA, for example, skin diseases account for a third of all reported occupational diseases (Levy and Wegman). Occupational skin diseases can be classified into several types, or reaction patterns: contact dermatitis (irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis), urticaria, follicle abnormalities, infections, pigment disorders, and neoplasms.
