CAMPAIGN UPDATE
A resolution to support a campaign against the Löfsted proposals on the Crane Register, Hard Hat & Work at Height Regs, was passed at the UCATT conference held in Scarborough the last week of May.
Tony O Brien and Liliana Alexa had a 2 hour meeting on 7th June with the HSE. The main employers organisation for cranes – the Construction Plant Hire Associationt (CPHA) – were also represented and said they had no objection to the demand of the CSC and the BCDAG that the Tower Cranes Regulations continue be retained. Both the CPHA and HSE said costs were not the reasons for proposing to remove these regulations. Instead the HSE officers at the meeting said the regulations had not achieved anything. Tony O’Brien said “Both myself and Liliana argued that this was not the case. There had been no fatalities from the use of tower cranes since the register was introduced in 2010. If revoked we could see this reversed. We requested a further meeting takes place involving the lead HSE officer with Professor Löfsted.”
